21,074,037 Views - 2001 Video - This Classic Mid to late 1980's Era GARAGE ROCK Song was a "Watershed" Moment in Indie WEIRD Rock !! GREENHOUSE EFFECT "RACERS" - 1987  ! THE BIRTH OF GRUNGE ROCK ! THE absolute  'BEGINNINGS" OF THE 1990'S DECADE STARTED RIGHT HERE ! BUT THIS DARK GARAGE SONG GEM IS PROBABLY MORE 'INDIE' THAN GRUNGE ! In this late 1980's little garage rocker, YOU CAN JUST FEEL the pain and anguish in this pesky little anthem of a  song as the lyrics waste no time in getting you very depressed and confused sad;

"Racers" was a long used and played idea that had  another name that the three piece band would rehearse at Bassist Rick Carmody's house in Torrance on Vista Del Parque long before Clark Hagins joined the band as Guitarist Phil Keegan wrote the guitar melody along with Carmody and then drummer Rich Hebben,..

In 1987, Hebben quit the band and Hagins joined not only on drums but on LEAD VOCALS and his writing abilities were well developed and worked on at this "Studio" at 251 Paseo De Gracia,..prior to his days with G.e.

THE LYRICS BEGIN IN ERNEST ;

"The guy couldn't take it any more

He bought the gun

now all there was left

TO BE DONE ,..

was to use it

on himself "

"I was trying hard to capture that very moment of when your brain literally just snaps because you feel so bad , like when all the serotonin has been drained ,..and you just feel like shit ,..giving yourself the creeps,." explains Clark The Shark Hagins of the 1980's G.e Mini-thrilling GARAGE ROCK epic !

GREENHOUSE EFFECT – RACERS LYRICS

Play " racers"
on Amazon Music Unlimited (ad)

the guy couldn’t take it anymore
‘he bought the gun
now all there was left
to be done was use it
on himself

he knew he was pathetic
a loser
a failure
he loved her
‘she didn’t know he existed…
he raised
‘the piece to his brains…

suddenly there was a knock at his door
he put the thing down
and quickly hid it
as his mum entered his room in tears
to tell him that she was gone
by her own hand
over him!

“he just couldn’t take it anymore
‘he bought the gun
now all there was left
to be done was use it
on himself

he was pathetic
a loser
‘she didn’t know he exists…
he raised
‘the piece to his brains…

‘just couldn’t take it anymore…
etc…

i just can’t take it anymore!
you just can’t take it anymore!
what are we waiting for?
we can be like them!
… or we can pretend!

we are pathetic losers
we don’t know we exist
we raise the piece
… to our brains…

IN 1987, CLARK "The Shark" HAGINS WAS OBSESSED WITH SEVERAL THINGS AND ONE OF THEM was the Lomita / Harbor City California three piece punk indie band A NOISE AGENCY;

'TO ME,.. A NOISE AGENCY had a purity ,..a kind of freedom ,..they were just the most fucking powerful little three piece band !

AND WHEN I SAW PICTURES OF THEM 'SAW THEM LIVE, BOUGHT THEIR ALBUM,, I WANTED TO 'BE THEM !!"

THEY WERE,..TO ME,. THE ULTIMATE TIDY LITTLE ANGRY 3 PIECE BAND !

but they had way more urgency and organization than say

the Minutemen ,..or even

the Descendent's,. EVER HAD !

Their 1985 Album "Moms in the Kitchen" was like my hymn ,..

Hagins was also obsessed with David Bowie albums ,..particularly believe it or not ,..his 1960's early RECORDINGS !

'MAID OF BOND STREET" WAS ONE of my favorite's ,..I remember well" Says Hagins,..

THERE was also this little diddy called "Please Mr. Grave Digger",...lol

Hagins was obsessed with many local girls in town but being treated like shit at "251" meant that there was a block inside Hagins' brain;

"People always made fun of me AND PUT ME DOWN and it evolved from the way the family treated me ,..I sensed that I was a "mistake baby born back in 1965" and that 'they never wanted me",..this would spread to my neighborhood and schools , ,..they cursed my art and anything that I ever did ,.,..South Bay People had nasty shit to say and little encouragement to offer,. ,.. the liberal Democrat Blue people from there are the biggest phony fucking hypocrite liars,..they aren't nice people at all like they claim ,.,.they're full of shit !!,...they fucking kill the unborn ,..FUCK THESE SOUTH BAY CREEPY PIECES OF FUCKING SHIT !! FUCK LIBERALS !! They are the Blue meanies '

Hagins ain't exactly a fan of Red People either,..

"WELL ,.. it was all very confusing back there in the PHONY South Bay ,.. I hated the phony Pro Choice hypocrite liberal Douchebags QUEUE  but I didn't like the Rednecks either,.."

Hagins would retreat into music; his art !!

"Listening to bands like Television, the Tubes, and Joy Division 'Dance to the radio" was something that I will never forget" Says Hagins,..

Hagins set up "studios' in his house at 251 Paseo De Gracia in Torrance ,..a place he would create demo ideas ; "A lotta my songs weren't very original,..I would steal a lotta shit and I would think it was so damn great and then somebody would be like "Dude,..that's Pictures of Lily by the Who dumb ass !!" ( Laughs ),..

As a lonely lad, drifting with no friends, Hagins would sometimes befriend just "local losers and wimps" ,.. "like myself ' laughs Hagins ,. "There was this one dude and like ,..his sister was fuckin' smokin' hot and I think I wrote a few early songs about her n' shit .like in between jack off sessions ( Laughs ),.,..and some of them later became G,e ideas like "3/4",.. "I was  like this complete douchebag,.. of course no chick was gonna get into me duh ,.. but like some retard, I just kept on tryin,..I'll never forget this one day, I was strummin' my guitar in the garage like watchin' TV and my mom comes in the room and she's like; "You blew it ,..she's getting married,." I remember,..i put that line later into the 1992 songs "The Ballad of Kurt Cobain,."

"My talent as a musician was quite remarkable though and inevitably ,..other local musicians always seemed to take notice ,..my drumming in my garage would get heard and there were many punkers and metalers that suddenly wanted to jam ,..despite me being such the geek ,..( Laughs ),.

When I would jam with bands, I began to develop "poetry" as I would hear the drums go with the guitar, etc,.."

Anyway,..there was one chick named Tania and one gal named Cindy and I believe Racers was sorta like my Joy Division / The Cure / The Smiths,.. Mega epic POETRY MOMENT where it all collided like fucking perfect BEAUTIFULLY BABY !! The song ,.. appears to make no sense yet perfectly nails anger-sadness- loneliness-depression but crunches it into a nice little rock tune ,..

'RACERS' WAS THE SHIT !!

"RACERS" HAS THAT DARK GARAGE VIBE OF 1966 ,..The Thirteenth Floor Elevators and the Music Machine and Electric Prunes indeed !,..  but it also has Bowie, The Standels , The Count 5,  Surfing beats, ugly distorted guitar, and fucking pain and sadness up the ass baby !! "This song packs an underground garage ROCK MAJESTY musty musky grim time ,..the late 1980's ,..and you can smell the clove cigarettes here and beer soaked carpet,.. this is as dreary and sullen as art rock ever get's !!  One thing that I will never forget is I played this song to Greg Ginn of Black Flag at this studio in Redondo and I will NEVER FORGET THE LOOK ON HIS FACE AS HE STARED RIGHT AT ME ,..he seemed terrified ,..( Laughs ),.."

Clark Haggins chats about Greenhouse affect and the 1987 song classic "Racers"; 'Well Racers was special to me because its the original depressing suicide grunge punk psychedelic song (Laughs)...it exemplified true Greenhouse Effect, Keegan's guitar work there totally breaks new alternative indie rock ground,..we couldn't believe that Sst records didn't like it back then,...well, growing up back in the South Bay meant I was like not a very popular dude,..I was a real little skinny blondie,..big jocks picked on me all the time ,.but I didn't get much relief at home because my big brother was this guy named Doug, ..he was not a very loving chap,..he was like a drill sergeant,..a couple of times he took an ax to my bedroom door,( Laughs )..another time he used a sledgehammer (Laughs)...it was a tough life,.. A VERY BAD SITUATION TO BE STUCK IN - BELIEVE ME ,..plus I was like in love with this chick I knew i'd never get,.,.I was a ROMANTIC SOUL ,....this is why my lyrics are so damned great,..I WOULD pour all my thoughts into it,.. AND I HAVE A BIT of a "Conservative" streak where i can appreciate certain artsy fartsy Douchebags that I may stumble upon and hear on the AM radio ,.. listening to talk radio and creeps like Michael Savage and his Hemmingway influences today is important to me...I like the Mark Levin talk radio show too,..he is very hateful and poetic,,.THOUGH SAVAGE IS JUST WAY BETTER ! but anyway ,..these guys are filled with bottled rage and hatred, and well ,... I fucking love them !! As well known world writer and or 'blogger', Higgins enjoys the fact that people read his writings as much as they enjoy G.e. "Racers is a chilling classic,..Phil Keegan plays some marvelous surf guitar but then he fucks it up with like this sick distortion..he was awesome" ,... I would love to do an interview with Conservativepunk.com and Nick Rizzuto,...'negative hurtful right-wing punk-rockers from today are good people - in the 60's they might be called LIBERALS LOL ,,,..because they are totally brutally honest- they let it all fly...sites like Somanymp3s.com can definitely make you a star and get your message out,..as well as my Zues robot ! on youtube, ..I've grown a fan-base with Naruto Shuppuden cartoons and tv Tokyo...I want to tour and play Loudpark Japan festival someday because I love Japanese women
...Andrew Breitbart is definitely an interesting intriguing person to me,..I would like an interview on his site..

The Late 1980's were a magical romantic underground time of glam, metal, punk , underground, grunge, , electronic,.politics,, religion, etc,,..the cultural circumstances that molded those times,..will never happen again ,..
